Anyone else have a thing for cheesy, early-80's ninja movies?

I don't know why but I love'em, maybe because I grew up on them on the original HBO, and Blockbuster stores where you could go pick one up for $1 or $2. I just found these on Amazon and Ebay, had to get'em. :D

Never did like the 80's cheeze movies much. I prefer the schlock 70's Kung Fu instead. Anything by Golden Harvest or "filmed in ShawScope" is what I spend my time watching. But then that's what I grew up watching, so I guess it's all about perspective and what we are familiar with.

Funny as it sounds, the Kung Fu movies just seem more "real" to me than the 80's western made Ninja flicks. Maybe there is a certain honesty in a movie about Chinese Kun Fu made in China by the Chinese rather than an American movie about Japanese Ninja.

LOL I agree and have no issues with those movies. I watch'em from time to time when I see them on.

I tend to watch them on purpose :)

Nothing makes a Saturday complete than sitting down for a bit and watching a Kung fu classic like "Kid with the Golden Arm" or "5 Deadly Venoms". Probably my all time favorite is "Super Ninjas" also goes by the title "5 Element Ninjas". It's got every cheeze/shlock gimmick from every movie ever, but absolutely fantastic action sequences and it has something unusual for a Kung Fu movie- character development and a plot you can follow.

Nope, give me a Runme Shaw movie over anything 80's.

My finace thinks I am nuts and doesn't understand why I love movies like this. But...

I'm currently trying to finish The 47 Ronin circa 1941 on youtube. It is a long movie (roughly 3:45:00), and it is in black and white w/ subtitles. But it is a damn good movie, just not very conducive to sleep on nights we have to be up very early to leave for work.

Would the Ninja Turtles count? I got a vigorous dose of them while my kids were little. Beats the crap out of Barney..... :D

I used to watch the original Power Rangers when I was living in Japan. You know, they weren't a kids show until the came to the States....

IMHO, we could have an entire horrifying thread just on Japanese television. Hooters isn't the only thing in the world that's "delightfully tacky, yet unrefined".

OMG- a Japanese TV show thread! Wonderful! Yes, they do have some...uh...shall we say "non-standard" formats? But Ultraman will forever be my one and only- my very earliest memories were of sitting on my Japanese nanny's knee (Eiko was her name) and watching Ultraman. I think I was maybe 2 or 3 at the time.
